About the group
We are a voluntary group affiliated to the national Badger Trust.
The Group was formed in April 2018 following a chance meeting with the then Chair of the Badger Trust at the ‘Ban Bloodsports on Ilkley Moor’ picnic protest on 12 August 2017. It has evolved to monitor and protect badgers across the whole of the Leeds area and to spread awareness of the plight of badgers.
The purpose of the group is to promote and enhance the welfare, conservation, understanding and protection of badgers, their setts and their habitats in Leeds and the surrounding areas.
Our aims are to:
-
Promote badger welfare and preserve their habitat in the Leeds area
-
Provide a framework for members and supporters to help badgers in ways suitable to them
-
Understand the population of badgers across Leeds and use that information to their benefit
-
Educate and inform people about badgers and the group’s activities
-
Maintain sufficient funds to achieve these objectives

What we do:
-
Record and monitor setts to check for badger activity, interference and help the police investigate any reports of wildlife crime
-
Record road traffic collisions, lobby for improved signage and raise awareness of traffic speed e.g. 'Give Badgers A Brake'
-
Monitor planning developments that may affect badgers, e.g. new housing schemes, and lobby for mitigation and follow-up monitoring
-
Give talks to local groups and schools about badgers
-
Fundraise for the group and related causes
-
Oppose and campaign against the badger cull
-
Campaign on other issues affecting badgers
